The Massachusetts racetrack at Agawam Park is now closed, but was operational until 1938. It was in 1934 that the owners of the Agawam Bowles Airport were financially challenged as a result of the Great Depression. They were forced to sell it, and the buyers saw the potential of pari-mutuel betting. They turned the old airport into a thoroughbred horse racing track and spent $1 million in constructing it. They took advantage of the old plane hangars and used them as stables, whilst building a grandstand. In 1935 they were amply rewarded when the great Seabiscuit won the Springfield Handicap, breaking the track record. The racetrack closed once the state had outlawed pari-mutual betting in November 1938, and the site reverted back to an airfield which the Army Air Corps used as a training site for pilots during the Second World War. Bowles Agawam Airport was still listed as an active airfield in the 1970s, but it closed for good in the 80's and is now an industrial park.
